SAN DIEGO – The University of San Diego men's tennis team earned its first win over UCLA in program history on Monday, edging the Bruins by a score of 4-3.
 
After each team won a doubles match, Will Davies and Iiro Vasa secured the doubles point with a 7-6 (10-8) win at No. 2.
 
Sacchitt Sharrma cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles, and Davies edged the Bruins at No. 6, 7-6, 7-6.
 
Coming down to the last point, #8 August Holmgren clinched the match for San Diego with a comeback 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles.
 
"A really gutsy team win today for this squad," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "Just exceptionally proud of this group for battling back after Saturday's disappointing finish. It says a lot about these young men and the culture we have established here at USD. We knew that we had never defeated UCLA before, and we talked through that fact yesterday. Today, we stayed focused on the moment and the opportunity in front of us. I'm very proud of Will Davies for putting the team on his back, starting with the doubles point. He sparked the charge that got this train rolling in the right direction. The team responded after a tough start to the singles play and competed down to the last point. This is a great team win and a great win for USD!"
 
USD improves to 7-2 on the season.
