SAN FRANCISCO — Six Toreros notched multiple hits,
Garrett Rennie turned in a solid start on the mound, and
Ian Churchill tossed two brilliant innings out of the bullpen as San Diego baseball (17-7, 6-1 WCC) cruised past San Francisco (14-15, 3-4 WCC) by an 8-3 margin to earn its eighth straight win.
A WELL-ROUNDED EFFORT AT THE PLATE
- Sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) got the scoring started in the top of the first with an RBI ground ball, plating fellow sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth when he sent a ball to shortstop.
- After the Dons answered back in the bottom of the frame to tie it at one run apiece, USD answered with five runs of its own, scoring via an RBI infield single from sophomore centerfielder Dustin Allen, an RBI double from Meidroth, a sacrifice fly from Sim, and an RBI single from junior catcher Caleb Ricketts. By the end of the inning, San Diego led 6-1.
- USF again responded with a solo home run in the bottom of the second, but Ricketts again provided a counterpoint, driving in a pair (Sim and sophomore utility player Jack Costello) in the top of the fourth to put the Toreros on top by a six-run margin at 8-2.
- San Francisco added a run in the bottom of the fifth with another solo shot but would get no closer, falling 8-3 to USD at Benedetti Diamond.
RENNIE BATTLES, CHURCHILL DOMINATES
- Rennie, a senior right-handed pitcher from Los Alamitos, California, turned in a solid start on the mound Friday, throwing 5.0 innings while scattering five hits, allowing three runs, walking three, and striking out five.
- He was relived by redshirt sophomore James Sashin, who tossed 1.1 scoreless frames while allowing a hit and a walk against a strikeout, followed by Churchill, a graduate transfer from Arizona.
- The Santa Barbara, California native entered for Sashin in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and just one out, but worked his way out of trouble via a strikeout and a fly out to strand a trio of Dons on the bases and preserve San Diego's 8-3 advantage.
- Churchill then struck out the side in both the eighth and the ninth as he completed 2.2 perfect innings to wrap up the game, totaling seven strikeouts on the afternoon.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Graduate utility player RJ Teijeiro led the way for the Toreros at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
- He was followed by five San Diego players who notched two hits on the afternoon: Meidroth (2-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2B), Costello (2-for-4, R, 2B), Ricketts (2-for-5, 3 RBIs), junior shortstop Cody Jefferis (2-for-5, R, 2B), and Allen (2-for-5, R).
- The game marked Meidroth's tenth game in a row with a hit and his 12th multi-hit contest of the season, while Costello extended his hit streak to seven games and also achieved his 12th multi-hit performance of 2022.
- Ricketts ran his hit streak to six games with his big afternoon and notched his eighth multi-hit game of the year.
- Rennie received his second win of the year to move to 2-2.
- The Toreros have now won nine out of their last 10 games.
