Toreros Take Down Aztecs for Mid-week Win at Fowler Park

San Diego baseball beats San Diego State 8-3 on Tuesday night

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (20-11, 7-5 WCC) utilized a patient approach at the plate to take down a crosstown rival on Tuesday night, drawing 10 walks as it beat San Diego State (7-25, 1-14 Mountain West) 8-3 for a hard-fought mid-week win at Fowler Park.

PATIENCE PAYS OFF
  • Sophomore utility player Jack Costello got the scoring started in the bottom of the first, plating sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth with an RBI double down the left field line.
  • Junior catcher Caleb Ricketts doubled the Torero lead a batter later when he came home on a passed ball, moving the score to 2-0 in favor of the home team.
  • San Diego State answered back with a trio of runs in the top of the third, taking a 3-2 lead via an RBI double, an RBI fielder's choice, and an RBI single.
  • Sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) then notched a key RBI in the bottom of the fifth in what marked his first start since March 6, tying the score at three runs apiece with a sacrifice fly to right field that plated true freshman catcher Ariel Armas (St. Augustine High School).
  • USD pulled back ahead an inning later, taking a 4-3 lead on a bases-loaded walk drawn by redshirt sophomore outfielder Camden Vasquez — who had entered as a pinch-hitter — that brought in graduate utility player RJ Teijeiro before adding on later in the frame when Armas scored on a fielding error by the Aztecs' shortstop, and Vasquez came home on a wild pitch to make it 7-3 San Diego.
  • Meidroth provided one final insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, plating sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen to give USD an 8-3 lead it would not relinquish.
A TEAM EFFORT ON THE MOUND
  • Redshirt freshman right-hander Ryan Kysar started the game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in a solid performance, tossing 5.0 innings while allowing three runs on three hits, walking two, and striking out three.
  • He was relieved by sophomore righty Jack Hyde (Grossmont High School), who threw a pair of scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh to earn his third win of the season and move to 3-1.
  • Another local sophomore right-hander in Ivran Romero (Poway High School) was next, and he worked around a walk and a pair of hits to toss a run-free eighth, leaving the bases loaded with a clutch strikeout to conclude the frame.
  • A third local pitcher finished the game on the mound for San Diego when sophomore lefty Cole Colleran (Canyon Crest Academy) twirled a scoreless (and hitless) ninth, working around a pair of a walks with a strikeout to secure his team the 8-3 victory over SDSU on Tuesday night.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Vasquez, Meidroth, Ricketts, Costello, and Armas all notched a single hit on the night, and Peraza, Vasquez, Meidroth, and Costello all drove in runs.
  • Meidroth (his team-leading 22nd and 23rd of the season) and Allen led the way for USD with two walks each, followed by Vasquez, Sim, Ricketts, Costello, Teijeiro, and Armas, who all drew one.
