San Diego baseball drops game one at BYU

PROVO, Utah — San Diego baseball (23-13, 9-7 WCC) struck first with a pair of runs and scored three times in the ninth inning but could not secure the win against BYU (21-14, 7-6 WCC) on Thursday night, dropping a tough 11-7 decision to the Cougars at Miller Park to begin its series in Provo.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior catcher Caleb Ricketts got the scoring started in the top of the first inning, singling to third base to bring home sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) and earn USD an early 1-0 lead.

  • BYU answered back and took a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the second on a pair of RBI singles and an RBI ground ball before Teijeiro did some answering of his own, reaching on a fielder's choice to again plate Sim and move the score to 4-3.
  • The Cougars added on with three runs in the third (an RBI double and a sacrifice fly), three in the fifth (an RBI single and a two-run homer), and one more in the bottom of the seventh (another sacrifice fly) to make it 11-3.
  • Ricketts launched his seventh homer of the season to deep right field in the eighth to cut the deficit to 11-4 and sophomore utility player Jack Costello cleared the bases with a three-RBI double in the top of the ninth, but San Diego couldn't close the gap down the stretch, dropping an 11-7 decision to BYU in game one.
