Hit Parade Leads San Diego Past BYU in Provo

Toreros even series with Cougars with 8-3 win at Miller Park

PROVO, Utah — San Diego baseball (24-13, 10-7 WCC) rallied for a decisive win on Friday night to even its series at BYU, taking down the Cougars (21-15, 7-7 WCC) by an 8-3 margin at Miller Park behind a well-rounded effort at the plate and a strong collective performance on the mound.

BATS COME ALIVE
  • After BYU struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, San Diego answered in emphatic fashion in the top of the second, scoring five times via RBI singles from junior shortstop Cody Jefferis, sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen, and sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School), plus a booming RBI double to right field from sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) to take a 5-1 lead.
  • The Cougars got one back in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run, but Jefferis again helped the Toreros strike back, clearing the bases in the top of the seventh with a three-RBI double down the left field line that moved the score to 8-2 in favor of USD.
  • BYU added a run in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single but it wouldn't be enough, as the Torero bullpen slammed the door to earn an 8-3 victory.
A TEAM EFFORT ON THE MOUND
  • Sophomore right-hander Ivran Romero (Poway High School) began the game on the mound for San Diego in what marked his first start of 2022 (the second of his career) and turned in a strong outing, tossing three innings of one-run ball as he worked around three hits and three walks with a trio of strikeouts.
  • Redshirt sophomore lefty Kyle Carr (San Marcos High School) came on in relief of Romero and set forth a career-high 2.1 innings pitched, earning his first college win to move to 1-0 after he racked up four strikeouts against two hits, two walks, and an earned run.
  • Graduate left-hander Ian Churchill continued his late-game dominance to close out the contest for San Diego, throwing a team-high 3.2 innings while allowing just one run, walking none, and striking out two to earn his second save of the season and secure his team the win.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Every player in the San Diego lineup notched a hit on Friday, including two apiece from Sim, Teijeiro, and Jefferis.
  • Jefferis led the way with a career-high four runs batted in, followed by Peraza with two, and Sim and Allen, who each drove in one.
  • Sophomore utility player Jack Costello paced the Toreros with a team-high two runs scored, followed by sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth, Ricketts, Teijeiro, Jefferis, Allen, and true freshman catcher Ariel Armas (St. Augustine High School), who all came in to score once.
  • Meidroth, Peraza, Sim, Costello, Teijeiro, and Armas all drew a walk on Friday.
