PROVO, Utah — Brycen Mautz turned in a gritty start on the mound,
Chase Meidroth hammered a late-game home run,
Ryan Kysar threw three clutch innings out of the bullpen, and San Diego baseball (25-13, 11-7 WCC) earned a hard-fought 4-3 win in the series finale at Miller Park on Saturday afternoon to take two of three from BYU (21-16, 7-8 WCC).
TIMELY HITTING GETS IT DONE
- Meidroth, a sophomore infielder from Manhattan Beach, California, got the scoring started in the top of the second inning with an RBI single to center field that plated junior shortstop Cody Jefferis.
- Sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) followed with another RBI single to center field to bring in true freshman catcher Ariel Armas (St. Augustine High School), and by the end of the second frame San Diego was out to a 2-0 lead.
- The Cougars got one back in the bottom of the second with an RBI single of their own, but Meidroth answered by hammering a two-run homer.
- BYU scored in the sixth and the seventh innings to pull within one run but could not beat the San Diego bullpen to complete the comeback, sealing a 4-3 win in the series finale for the Toreros.
MAUTZ AND KYSAR PITCH SAN DIEGO TO VICTORY
- Mautz, a sophomore lefty from San Diego, California (Westview High School), began the game on the mound for the Toreros in what marked his 10th start of the season and his first in a series finale.
- He tossed 6.0 innings of two-run ball on Saturday, scattering 10 hits, walking one, and striking out three as he earned his team-best seventh victory of the season to move to 7-1.
- Mautz was relieved by redshirt freshman Ryan Kysar, who threw three gutsy innings out of the bullpen to earn his first career college save.
- Kysar surrendered four hits and allowed just one run, walking one against a pair of strikeouts.
- He stranded both the tying and winning runs on the basepaths in the bottom of the ninth when he induced a game-ending double play to secure San Diego the 4-3 victory.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Meidroth led the way for the Toreros at the plate with his team-best 16th multi-hit performance of the year, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs, a home run (his fifth), and a run scored.
- Peraza (one RBI) and Armas were next with two hits apiece, followed by Ricketts and Costello, who each notched a single hit.
- Armas had a game-high two runs scored, and Jefferis and Meidroth each scored once.
- Sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) drew the Toreros' lone walk of the afternoon.
