SAN DIEGO — Three massive home runs and a pair of brilliant outings on the mound powered San Diego baseball (26-14, 12-7 WCC) to victory on Friday night, earning the Toreros an emphatic 8-3 win over conference foe Santa Clara (22-18, 10-9 WCC) at Fowler Park.
POWER SURGE
- The Broncos struck first with a run in the game's opening frame, but graduate utility player RJ Teijeiro quickly provided an answer in the bottom of the inning with an RBI grounder to first base that plated sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) and evened the score at 1-1.
- San Diego proceeded to take the lead in the bottom of the second via a pair of towering home runs from a duo of sophomore infielders.
- After sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen singled to lead off the frame, Chase Meidroth sent a two-run shot over the left-center field wall, then Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) turned on a 2-2 fastball for a solo blast that cleared the trees beyond Fowler Park's left field fence.
- For Meidroth, his sixth homer of 2022. For Sim, his conference-best 11th. For the Toreros, it was a 4-1 advantage after just two innings of play.
- Sophomore utility player Jack Costello added some fireworks of his own in the bottom of the third with a solo home run (his fourth of 2022), demolishing an 0-1 fastball to dead center that hit nearly halfway up the batter's eye with authority.
- Junior shortstop Cody Jefferis added on later in the inning with a sacrifice fly that brought in redshirt sophomore outfielder Camden Vasquez and put USD up by a five-run, 6-1 margin.
- SCU struck back with two runs in the top of the fourth via a pair of RBI singles, but Allen erased the Broncos' progress toward a comeback with one decisive swing of the bat, driving in both Jefferis and Peraza with a two-RBI triple that gave the Toreros an 8-3 lead they would not relinquish.
KYSAR STARTS IT, CHURCHILL FINISHES IT
- Redshirt freshman righty Ryan Kysar began the game on the mound for San Diego in what marked his sixth career start, tossing a career-high six innings while allowing three runs on five hits, walking two, and striking out a career-high seven as he earned the win to move to 2-0 on the year.
- He was relieved by redshirt sophomore righty James Sashin, who loaded the bases in the seventh with a pair of hits and a walk.
- Graduate left-hander Ian Churchill entered with no outs and stranded all three runners for a scoreless frame, retiring the side with a fielder's choice on a comebacker right to him (he threw to home for the out), a popup to second base, and a groundout to first base that saw Churchill make an athletic play to cover the bag and receive fellow graduate student RJ Teijeiro's relay for the third out.
- He finished the game with two more scoreless innings after working his way out of trouble in the seventh, allowing just one hit against three strikeouts and no walks, a performance that was good for his third save of the season.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Meidroth, Sim, Costello, and Allen each notched two hits on Friday night, marking their 18th, 14th, 16th, and ninth multi-hit performances of the year, respectively.
- Meidroth's 18 multi-hit games leads USD, and Costello's 16 are second.
- Meidroth and Allen both drove in two runs against the Broncos, followed by Teijeiro, Sim, and Jefferis, who all drove in one.
