Torero Bats Dominate in Big Win Over Santa Clara

San Diego baseball earns 17-4 win versus Broncos to take series in nationally televised matchup

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (27-14, 13-7 WCC) scored eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back on Saturday night at Fowler Park, taking down conference foe Santa Clara (22-19, 10-10 WCC) with an offensive tour de force that earned the Toreros a 17-4 win as they set new season-highs in both hits (20) and runs.

AN OFFENSIVE ONSLAUGHT
  • Sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first by lining an opposite-field two-RBI triple off the right field wall, plating sophomores Angelo Peraza (utility player) and Chase Meidroth (infielder) to stake San Diego to an early 2-0 lead.
  • The Toreros then added another six runs via:
    •   An rbi single to left field from junior catcher Caleb Ricketts
    •     A two-RBI double down the left field line from junior shortstop Cody Jefferis
    •     A two-RBI single to center field from Meidroth
    •     And another RBI from Sim, this time in the form of a single
    •     By the end of the frame USD had an 8-0 lead after tallying a remarkable seven hits and bringing 14 batters to the plate.
  • San Diego added on in emphatic fashion an inning later when Meidroth hammered a grand slam over Fowler Park's left field wall, bringing home sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen, true freshman infielder Justin DeCriscio, and Jefferis to make it 12-0 Toreros after less than two innings of play.
  • Santa Clara got four runs back in the top of the fourth with a pair of two-RBI singles, but USD had an immediate answer in the bottom of the frame when Meidroth ripped his second homer of the game (again to left field) and Sim reached on an error by the Santa Clara shortstop that brought in sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School), bringing the Torero lead back to 10 at 14-4.
  • Costello provided some late-game fireworks with a towering home run to deep left field in the fifth, then Ricketts got in on the action an inning later with a moonshot of his own, pulling a two-run shot over the right-center field wall to move the score to 17-4 and round out a dynamic day for the San Diego offense.
MAUTZ SOLID, BULLPEN SHUTS IT DOWN
  • Sophomore lefty Brycen Mautz (Westview High School) made his team-best 11th start of the season on Saturday night and turned in a solid effort, allowing four runs on four hits across five innings of work against three walks and nine strikeouts.
  • He was relieved by sophomore righty Jack Hyde (Grossmont High School), who worked around a hit to toss a scoreless sixth, then junior right-hander Jack Dolak (St. Augustine High School), who threw a perfect seventh with a pair of strikeouts.
  • Junior righty Jake Reed was next with a scoreless eighth as he worked around a hit with a strikeout, then sophomore left-hander Cole Colleran (Canyon Crest Academy) closed things out with a run-free ninth as he also worked around a hit with a strikeout.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Meidroth led the way for USD at the plate with a 3-for-5 performance that tied his career high for hits in a game and saw him set new career highs with four runs scored and seven RBIs alongside a single walk.
  • His two home runs on Saturday evening came after also going yard on Friday.
  • Jefferis put together a massive night of his own, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in in addition to a couple outstanding plays in the field at shortstop.
  • Sim and Ricketts matched Meidroth's big evening with apiece, with Sim coming across to score twice and driving in four, and Ricketts also coming across to score twice and driving in three.
  • Peraza joined in on the multi-hit action with a 2-for-5 night, scoring twice and driving in two alongside a triple.
  • His three-bagger was one of two the Toreros notched on Saturday night (Sim).
  • DeCriscio went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
  • In total, six different Toreros compiled a multi-hit game (Meidroth, Peraza, Sim, Ricketts, Jefferis, and DeCriscio, four drove in more than one run (Meidroth, Sim, Ricketts, and Jefferis), and six came around to score more than once (Meidroth, Peraza, Sim, Ricketts, Jefferis, and DeCriscio).
  • Junior utility player Max Jung-Goldberg and sophomore infielder Will Worthington both had hits off the bench.
  • Five different USD players drove in a run on Saturday night, nine different players had a hit, and nine different players scored runs.
