SAN DIEGO — Caleb Ricketts put together his 16th multi-hit game of the season and
Garrett Rennie turned in four scoreless innings out of the bullpen but San Diego baseball (27-15, 18-8 WCC) could not rally for the comeback on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 3-2 decision to Santa Clara (23-19, 11-10 WCC) at Fowler Park.
LATE-GAME RALLY FALLS SHORT
- After Santa Clara struck first with a run in the top of the opening frame, sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen provided an answer for San Diego, legging out an infield single to second base to plate true freshman infielder Justin DeCriscio and even the score at 1-1.
- The Broncos took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth with an RBI double, then added on in the sixth to make it 3-1 with an RBI single.
- Ricketts cut the deficit to one with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth but USD would get no closer, suffering a 3-2 defeat to SCU on Sunday afternoon.
TRIO OF PITCHERS TURN IN SOLID EFFORTS
- Redshirt freshman left-hander Kyle Carr (San Marcos High School) began the game on the mound for the Toreros in what marked his fourth career start and turned in a career-high 3.0 innings while surrendering two runs, working around four hits and a walk with four strikeouts, which tied his career high.
- He was relieved by redshirt junior righty Ryan Robinson, who set forth two scoreless frames while allowing a hit and recording three strikeouts, and Rennie (senior right-hander), who put together USD's longest outing of the day when he finished the game with four innings while allowing just a single unearned run, three hits, a walk, and a strikeout.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Ricketts (junior catcher) led the way for USD at the plate with a 3-for-4 performance that saw him drive in a run, followed by Allen, who was 2-for-3 with a walk and also had a single RBI.
- Sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth, sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School), Sim (Torrey Pines High School), and redshirt sophomore Camden Vasquez all had one hit on Sunday, and Meidroth and Vasquez each came in to score a run.
- Junior shortstop Cody Jefferis had a game-high two walks.
