SAN DIEGO – The University of San Diego men's tennis team (22-3) is set to face UC Irvine (17-6) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, May 6, hosted by the University of Southern California. The match is scheduled to start at 10:00 AM PT, with the winner moving on to face either USC or Nevada on Saturday at 1:00 PM PT.
USD, which is currently ranked No. 19 in the NCAA, accumulated a record of 22-3 (9-0 WCC) en route to its seventh consecutive WCC Tournament Championship. The Toreros also won the Regular Season Championship and defeated 10 ranked opponents throughout the season.
UC Irvine earned The Big West's automatic bid after winning their fourth conference tournament title and first since 2011. As the No. 3 seed, UCI defeated No. 6 UC Davis in the opening round before sweeping No. 2 Cal Poly in the semifinals, and upsetting top-seeded UC Santa Barbara, 4-2, in the championship match.
Earlier this year on January 21, San Diego defeated UC Irvine in the first dual match of the season, 6-1. The Toreros earned the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, and got singles wins from
Gui Osorio,
Alex Stater,
Iiro Vasa,
Marvin Schaber, and
Will Davies.
In the latest ITA Rankings, WCC Player of the Year
August Holmgren was ranked No. 5 in singles. Holmgren and teammate
Gui Osorio are ranked No. 22 in doubles.
San Diego has now made 10 of the last 11 NCAA Tournaments, including five out of six under head coach
Ryan Keckley.
