San Diego Takes Down Tigers In Game One

Toreros beat Pacific 9-4 at Klein Family Field

STOCKTON, Calif. — Four Toreros notched multi-hit games alongside strong pitching performances from Ryan Kysar and Ryan Robinson on Friday night, leading San Diego baseball (28-16, 14-8 WCC) to a 9-4 win in game one of its series with Pacific (14-29, 5-14 WCC) at Klein Family Field.

TORERO BATS STRIKE FIRST
  • Graduate utility player RJ Teijeiro got the scoring started in the top of the second, singling to left center field to plate junior shortstop Cody Jefferis and stake San Diego to an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Toreros added on an inning later, scoring four times in the top of the third via an RBI single from junior catcher Caleb Ricketts, a two-RBI triple from Jefferis, and an RBI single from junior utility player Max Jung-Goldberg to make it 5-0 USD.
  • Sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen came in to score on a throwing error by the Tigers' catcher in the top of the fourth before Pacific struck back with three runs in the bottom of the frame on a three-run homer, pulling them within three at 6-3 Toreros.
  • Sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth helped San Diego answer with a longball of his own in the top of the sixth (a solo shot that was his ninth of 2022), then sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) and Ricketts provided more valuable insurance with an RBI double and an RBI single later in the inning.
  • A solo home run brought UP within five at 9-4 in the bottom of the seventh but it would get no closer, with San Diego earning a win by the same score in the series' opening game.
KYSAR AND ROBINSON SHINE ON MOUND
  • Redshirt freshman righty Ryan Kysar started the game on the mound for USD and turned in seven solid innings, setting a new career high in innings pitched and tying his career mark in strikeouts (seven) while allowing four runs on six hits and walking two to earn his third college win.
  • Redshirt junior right-hander Ryan Robinson turned in a strong performance of his own out of the bullpen, leaving the bases loaded with three straight strikeouts after entering with no outs in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Redshirt sophomore righty James Sashin worked around a pair of hits with a strikeout to twirl a scoreless ninth.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Meidroth led the way for the Toreros at the plate with a 3-for-5 evening, coming around to score two runs alongside a home run, an RBI, a walk, and a stolen base.
  • Sim, Ricketts, and Jefferis each had two hits on Friday night, with Sim notching a double and an RBI, Ricketts adding a pair of RBI singles and a run scored, and Jefferis recording a two-RBI triple in addition to two runs scored.
  • Every player in the San Diego starting lineup had a hit against the Tigers, and all but two came in to score a run.
  • Meidroth, sophomore utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School), and Teijeiro all drew a walk on Friday.
