Clutch Comeback Earns USD Series Win at Pacific

Ricketts and Meidroth go yard, Mautz and Churchill battle on mound

STOCKTON, Calif. — Caleb Ricketts and Chase Meidroth launched a pair of clutch home runs to complement solid outings on the mound from Brycen Mautz and Ian Churchill on Saturday afternoon, earning San Diego baseball (29-16, 15-8 WCC) a 9-6 win over Pacific (14-30, 5-15 WCC) at Klein Family Field to secure a series victory.

A WELL-ROUNDED EFFORT AT THE PLATE
  • After Pacific struck first with a two-run homer in the opening frame, junior utility player Max Jung-Goldberg helped San Diego strike back, ripping an RBI double to left-center field to bring home junior shortstop Cody Jefferis before Jung-Goldberg himself came around to score on a throwing error to even the score at 2-2.
  • The Tigers answered with a run in the bottom of the third on a wild pitch, then USD again hit back with a pair of runs when junior catcher Caleb Ricketts launched a towering solo shot over the right field wall and graduate utility player RJ Teijeiro brought in sophomore utility player Jack Costello with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-3 in favor of the Toreros.
  • Jefferis provided an insurance run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single to move the score to 5-3 USD, but Pacific quickly answered and retook the lead in the bottom of the frame with a three-run homer, making it 6-5 Tigers.
  • Not to be outdone, Meidroth (sophomore infielder) provided the game's deciding blow just a half inning later with a massive three-run shot of his own that cleared Klein Family Field's left-center wall by a healthy margin (his 10th homer of 2022), restoring San Diego's advantage at 8-6 when he drove in Teijeiro and sophomore center fielder Dustin Allen.
  • Teijeiro added some late-game insurance in the top of the ninth with an RBI single back up the middle that plated redshirt sophomore infielder Camden Vasquez to give USD a 9-6 lead it would not relinquish, earning San Diego at least a series win in Stockton.
MAUTZ STARTS IT, CHURCHILL FINISHES IT
  • Sophomore lefty Brycen Mautz (Westview High School) began the game on the mound for the Toreros in what marked his team-high 12th start of the season, throwing 4.2 innings while surrendering three runs on five hits, walking two, and striking out eight.
  • He was relieved by graduate left-hander Ian Churchill, who threw 4.1 innings out of the bullpen while allowing three runs on two hits, walking one, and striking out six to earn his third win of 2022 and move to 3-2 on the year.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Ricketts, Jefferis, Jung-Goldberg, and Teijeiro all had two hits on Saturday afternoon, with Teijeiro leading the way with three RBIs and Ricketts, Jefferis, and Jung-Goldberg all driving in one.
  • Meidroth matched Teijeiro's big day with three RBIs of his own as he went 1-for-6 with the three-run homer.
  • Ricketts led the way with two runs scored, followed by Meidroth, Teijeiro, Jefferis, Jung-Goldberg, Costello, Vasquez, and Allen, who all scored once.
  • Allen was 1-for-3 on Saturday with a run scored and a walk.
  • Sophomore Angelo Peraza walked three times and swiped a career and game-high three stolen bases on Saturday.
