Special Season Ends in Corvallis

USD baseball's most successful campaign in nearly a decade concludes with 14-4 loss to Vanderbilt

CORVALLIS, Ore. — San Diego baseball (37-20, 17-10 WCC) dropped a tough 14-4 decision to Vanderbilt (38-22, 14-16 SEC) on Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium, ending the program's most successful season in more than a decade on day three of the NCAA Corvallis Regional.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Commodores struck first with three runs in the top of the first, then added two runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth, two in the seventh, three in the eighth, and three in the ninth to secure the win.
  • USD answered back in the bottom of the third when sophomore infielder Chase Meidroth brought in sophomore outfielder Dustin Allen with an RBI groundout, then sophomore infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) singled back up the middle to score junior shortstop Cody Jefferis.
  • Sim proved to be a factor yet again in the fifth, hammering a towering solo home run to deep left field that exited Goss Stadium entirely, clearing both the fence and the bleachers for his second RBI of the afternoon.
  • Graduate student RJ Teijeiro added another San Diego run in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI groundout that cut the deficit to just seven runs, but the Toreros would get no closer.
A TEAM EFFORT ON THE MOUND
  • Sophomore right-hander Ivran Romero (Poway High School) started the game on the mound for the Toreros and threw a single inning.
  • He was followed by graduate lefty Ian Churchill, who did not allow an earned run across three frames.
  • Sophomore right-hander Jack Hyde (Grossmont High School) entered in the fifth and threw two innings, followed by redshirt junior righty Ryan Robinson, who threw two more.
  • Redshirt freshman right-hander Drake Frize threw a third of an inning in the ninth before local lefty Cole Colleran closed things out with two thirds of a frame.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Sim, junior catcher Caleb Ricketts, and sophomore utility player Jack Costello all had two hits on Sunday, with Sim leading the way with two runs scored, two RBIs, and his 12th home run of 2022.
  • Teijeiro and Meidroth also drove in a run, and Jefferis and Allen both came in to score one.
  • Allen paced USD with two walks, followed by Jefferis, Meidroth, and junior utility player Max Jung-Goldberg, who all drew one free pass.
  • Jefferis and Costello both doubled on Sunday.

WHAT IT MEANS
  • San Diego's 37 wins in 2022 marks the program's most since 2013.
  • USD's win over Vanderbilt on Friday was the program's first victory in an NCAA Regional since 2013.
  • The Toreros' 37-20 final record and .649 winning percentage in 2022 under Brock Ungricht is the best finish by any first-year head coach in San Diego baseball history.
