DURHAM, NC – Despite holding a 14-9 advantage in shots, the University of San Diego men's soccer team fell to Elon on Sunday, 3-0. The Toreros nearly tied the game in the 78
th minute, but Elon scored on the ensuing attack before adding a third with 11 seconds remaining.
USD falls to 0-2 on the season, and will host Houston Baptist for the home opener on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon registered the first shot of the game in the 17th minute, which was blocked by the Toreros.
- San Diego got inside the 18 with a give-and-go from Rhys Gourdie and Cesar Bahena late in the first half, but the Elon goalkeeper intercepted the final pass.
- With less than a minute left in the first half, Gourdie bended a shot that went just wide left. At the break, the teams were scoreless.
- Elon got on the board first in the 59th minute after playing a long ball down the right side, dribbling inside the 18, and finishing just before USD defenders collapsed on the play.
- Tunbridge was inches away from the equalizer in the 78th minute with a left-footed strike, but the goalkeeper was able to stay outside of the goal line after leaping for the save.
- Less than a minute later on a counter-attack, Elon made it 2-0.
- With 11 seconds remaining in the match, the Phoenix sent a long cross to the back post and headed it in to seal the 3-0 win.
