SAN DIEGO – Mason Tunbridge buried a penalty kick in the 58
th minute, and the University of San Diego men's soccer team tied Houston Baptist in the 2022 home opener, 1-1.
After a scoreless first half, the Huskies tallied an early second half goal to take the lead. Just over 10 minutes later, Tunbridge drew a foul inside the box and connected on the equalizer.
USD moves to 0-2-1 on the season, and will travel to Cal Baptist on Monday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- USD played with a man up beginning in the 43rd minute, as HBU drew a red card after colliding with GK Jason Dubrovich.
- The teams were scoreless by halftime, with USD holding a 4-2 advantage in shots.
- Houston Baptist quickly took a 1-0 lead out of the break, sneaking a ball inside the near post in the 47th minute.
- In the 58th minute, Tunbridge dribbled through multiple defenders and got fouled just inside the 18. On the penalty kick, he sent a left-footed shot to the right side to tie the game at 1-1.
- Ross Johnstone nearly gave USD the lead in the 77th minute, playing a ball over the goalkeeper's head from 55 yards out that went just wide.
