Defense Stands Tall in Scoreless Draw at San Diego State

Freshman goalkeeper Sophine Kevorkian key in 0-0 decision for San Diego women's soccer

SAN DIEGO — A match-high four saves from freshman goalkeeper Sophine Kevorkian kept San Diego women's soccer in a taut defensive battle on Thursday night at the SDSU Sports Deck, earning the Toreros (1-3-1, 0-0 WCC) a hard-fought 0-0 draw at crosstown rival San Diego State (2-1-2, 0-0 Mountain West).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • USD totaled 13 shots (four on goal), besting the Aztecs' shot total by one.
  • Forwards Delaney Jannone (senior) and Cameryn Maddox (freshman) had four led the way with four shots apiece, followed by sophomores Sara Evans and Lexi Nobles with two, and freshman midfielder Josefine Schlichting with one.
  • San Diego's four shots on goal came from Jannone, Evans, Nobles, and and Schlichting.
  • Kevorkian, a San Diego, California native who attended La Jolla High School, fended off three shots on goal in the first half before batting away two more in the second.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • San Diego trailed San Diego State in shots by a 7-4 margin at the half, but turned up the pressure in the second period with nine shots to the Aztecs' five.
  • USD also held the advantage in corner kicks on Thursday evening, 10-2.
  • Thursday night's tie marks just the second time in 21 matches that a clash between SDSU and USD women's soccer has ended in a draw.
  • The lone previous tie between the Aztecs and the Toreros came in the Fall of 1995, a 1-1 decision at San Diego State that ended in double overtime.
THEY SAID IT
  • "It's a clean sheet, there's some silver linings to the tie," San Diego head coach Louis Lieberman said of the match as a whole. "I loved the way we grinded out that second half. To be fouled as much as we were and still try and play through that and get the tie, I'm happy with that, there's a lot of good things that happened. We just have to keep working on finishing, and just getting better as a team."
  • "She just makes good decisions under pressure," Lieberman described of Kevorkian, who has recorded 10 saves in five games to begin her college career. "It always helps diffuse what the other team is trying to do. I'm really proud of her, and how she stayed strong as a young keeper."
UP NEXT
The Toreros will remain on the road this weekend, traveling to Long Beach State on Sunday night for a matchup with the Beach. Kickoff at George Allen Field is set for 7 p.m.
