Football Falls at UC Davis in Non-Conference Finale

DAVIS, CA – In the final non-conference game of the 2022 season, the University of San Diego football team fell at UC Davis, 43-13.
 
The Toreros compiled 352 yards of total offense, including 166 on the ground.
 
Sophomore wide receiver Vance Jefferson caught a career-high nine passes for 104 yards and a touchdown.
 
Redshirt senior running back Chris Childers continued his strong start to the season, rushing 16 times for 90 yards (5.6 average). Redshirt junior quarterback Re-al Mitchell was also efficient on the ground, rushing 11 times for 46 yards and a touchdown.
 
USD drops to 1-2 on the season, and will wrap up its three-game road swing at Valparaiso next Saturday.     
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UC Davis got on the board first early in the first quarter, connecting on a 16-yard touchdown pass.
  • After intercepting a USD pass, UC Davis extended its lead with a six-play, 78-yard touchdown drive to go ahead 14-0.
  • The Aggies blocked a punt in the beginning of the second quarter, and later capitalized with a nine-yard touchdown rush.
  • UC Davis struck again with a 50-yard pass down the middle followed by a 15-yard touchdown pass. It led 28-0 with 8:43 left in the second quarter.
  • USD answered with a seven play, 66-yard touchdown drive to get on the board. Childers registered a 21-yard rush, and Judd Erickson later found Jefferson down the left side for a 28-yard touchdown connection.
  • Late in the first half, UC Davis went 71 yards in 3:37, eventually rushing for a 7-yard touchdown to extend its lead to 35-7 by halftime.
  • After UC Davis missed a 46-yard field goal attempt, San Diego answered with a touchdown. On a third-and-8, Erickson evaded pressure and found Carner for a 31-yard pass. Later, Mitchell took a snap, rushed to the right, and hurdled a defender en route to a 15-yard score.
  • On a fourth-and-8 from the USD31, Hunter Nichols broke up a pass in the end zone to give USD the ball back.
  • Late in the third quarter, the Aggies connected on a 62-yard touchdown pass to go ahead 43-13.
  • Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.

  • Erickson finished 17-for-28 with 177 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

UP NEXT
USD will play its third straight road game and first conference game of the season at Valparaiso on Saturday. The Toreros hold a 21-6 advantage in the all-time series, including 14 straight wins. Last season, San Diego earned a 21-14 victory and held a 410-57 advantage in total yards.
