Women’s Basketball Drops Afternoon Contest Against San Francisco

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (10-10, 4-5 WCC) could not bounce back from a first half deficit, falling to San Francisco (14-7, 4-5 WCC), 69-56, on Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
Kasey Neubert led all Toreros with 14 points on 7-for-8 shooting and seven rebounds, with 10 points and four rebounds coming in the fourth quarter. Myah Pace added 12 points and Kylie Horstmeyer went for 11 points and seven rebounds.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Diego got off to a sensational start from the field, jumping out to a 15-6 advantage in the first quarter.
  • Horstmeyer and Ayanna Khalfani were the catalyst of the early run, pushing the pace and scoring four points apiece.
  • However, the Dons were quick to respond and cut the lead to just two at the end of the period.
  • Pace and Neubert helped keep the game tight throughout the second quarter, as the two sides traded baskets.
  • Melesungu Afeaki also hit a critical three pointer with 1:42 left in the half, but the Dons added two late free throws to lead 34-29 going into the locker room.
  • San Francisco started the third quarter with a 7-2 run and did not look back, securing a lead of 13 by the end of the quarter.
  • Neubert attempted to will the Toreros back in the contest, with a 10-point effort, but the Dons had an answer, as Ioanna Krimili finished the game with 18 points for the visitors.
 
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Pace continued her climb up the Toreros all-time scoring list, passing Debbie Theroux (1,015) to take over 21st place. Next up is Aubrey Ward-El (1,029) in 20th place.
  • With two offensive rebounds on the day, Pace also passed Jill Shaver (215) for tenth on the Toreros all-time list. Next up is Sydney Hunter (221) in ninth.
  • Horstmeyer finished with a career-best seven rebounds in the loss.
 
UP NEXT
The Toreros are headed out on the road for two games, beginning with a matchup at Pacific on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. The game will be streamed via the WCC Network.
