Khalfani’s Career-High Propels Women’s Basketball to Sweep of Saint Mary’s

MORAGA, Calif. – The San Diego women's basketball program (12-10, 6-5 WCC) got several standout performances, en route to a 67-54 win over Saint Mary's (10-12, 4-7 WCC) on Saturday night at the UCU Pavilion.

Ayanna Khalfani led the way with a career-high 20 points and nine rebounds, while Kasey Neubert tallied 12 points and 12 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With a quick four points apiece from Neubert and Kiera Oakry to open up the game, the Toreros and Gaels got off to a quick start on the offensive end.
  • However, the Toreros were able to sustain their success from the field, while the Gaels could not, going on a 10-4 run to finish the quarter up 21-14.
  • The Gaels opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run, but would never lead again, as the Toreros would hold off any Saint Mary's response from there on out.
  • Oakry finished the quarter with five more points to get nine in the half, while Neubert stood at seven points and seven rebounds at the break, as the Toreros would lead 37-27.
  • The Toreros would build a lead as high as 16 points at 5:57 left in the third quarter, as Myah Pace scored five early points in the period.
  • The Gaels would slowly chip their way back into the game, cutting the lead to as low as six with 7:06 remaining in the game.
  • From there, both teams would go 5:24 without scoring, before Khalfani would take over the game.
  • Khalfani scored six points in the final 1:46, using her speed in transition to capitalize on several turnovers from the home side.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • With nine points tonight, Pace moved into a tie for 19th place on the Toreros all-time scoring list, passing Aubrey Ward-El (1,029) and matching Sydney Hunter (1,036).
  • The Toreros have swept the season series against the Gaels for the first time since the 2019-20 season.
  • After allowing 47 rebounds to the Gaels in the win on Dec. 29, the Toreros responded to hold them to just 28 rebounds tonight, while out-rebounding the Gaels by 12.
  • Khalfani became the first Torero to score 20 points in a game since Steph Gorman in the WNIT first round win over Cal Baptist on Mar. 17, 2022.
