Stone’s Late Equalizer Powers Women’s Soccer to Draw with LMU

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's soccer program (1-9-2, 0-1-1 WCC) recorded a late equalizer off the head of Olivia Stone, en route to a hard-fought, 1-1 draw with LMU (6-5-1, 0-0-1 WCC) on Wednesday night at Torero Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After San Diego opened up the previous matchup on Sept. 23 with an early goal, it was LMU who struck early on Wednesday.
  • A corner kick from Gabriella Marchal found the head of Jennessa Groves, who gave the Lions a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute.
  • The Lions were able to contain the Toreros for the entire first half, allowing just one shot.
  • San Diego made adjustments at the half and slowly began to tack on the pressure.
  • The defense locked in, as Aba Dunbar, Kylie Perez and Kamryn Simpson helped maintain the middle of the pitch and limit the Lions offense.
  • Sara Evans had a chance partially blocked in the 77th minute that found its way into the goalkeeper's arms, but it opened the flood gates for the San Diego offense.
  • The Toreros nearly struck for a goal off a beautiful cross from Evans, who found the feet of Stone inside the six-yard box, but the ball was poked high over the crossbar.
  • Nevertheless, the Toreros pressed forward and won a corner kick in the 83rd minute.
  • Evans took the kick and played it short to Lexi Zandonella-Arasa, who rifled in a cross to the head of Stone, who beat the LMU goalkeeper and tied the match at 1-1.
  • LMU nearly recorded a response just minutes later, but Sophine Kevorkian made a diving stop to her left to rob Groves of her second goal in the 86th minute.
  • In the dying moments of the game, Katie Baxter had two chances for a winner, with her first shot going high.
  • Her next one was just slightly from an offside position, as the Toreros settled for a draw.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • The Toreros held LMU (eight) under 10 shots in the game and are now 1-1-2 this season when allowing 15 shots or less.
  • With three saves, Kevorkian (164) moved into sole possession of eighth on the Toreros all-time saves list, passing Karen Cook (162). Next up is Libby Bassett (177) in seventh.
  • Kevorkian also matched Courtney Parsons as the program's all-time leader in draws with six.
  • With an assist today, Evans now has five points in four career games against LMU.
