SAN DIEGO – The San Diego cross country program made the most of their time back in the city, as the Toreros shined at the San Diego Mesa College Invite on Friday.
Â
The women's team took home first place in the field of 10 teams, led by three top-five finishes. The men's side took fifth place overall in the 16-team field. Â Â
Â
"It was great to race at home," said head coach
Will Guarino. "It was great to see a home crowd there in support of the local running, but I'm also very proud of Ary [Jaimes], who ran remarkably well. Same with Daniella [Hubble] and our number one, two, three. I think someone that had a really outstanding race that could be overlooked by those top three is Maggie Duba. She had a fantastic race."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The morning opened with the women's side, who shined from the start of the race.
- The trio of Daniella Hubble, Aryam Jaimes and Gianna Sbarbaro opened the race together at fourth, fifth and sixth through the first kilometer, but pressed their way into second, third and fifth.
- Hubble finished as the top collegiate player in the race, setting a 5K personal best.
- Maggie Duba also shined, rising from 28th through the first kilometer up to 10th.
- The men would take the course next and for the third consecutive meet, Russell Gokemeijer led the way.
- The senior hovered around the top-25 the entire race and ultimately placed 22nd.
Â
