MORAGA, Calif. – Behind a pair of second half goals, the San Diego men's soccer program (8-3-1, 2-0-0 WCC) took home a 2-1 victory over Saint Mary's (5-4-2, 0-2-0 WCC) on Saturday afternoon at Saint Mary's Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Right out of the gate, the Toreros defense faced pressure, as the Gaels tallied the first three shots of the game, with the opening shot forcing Luis Ludosan to be sharp and make a diving save to his left.
- The Toreros responded, as Samy Kanaan had a strong chance in tight in the eighth minute, but the Gaels goalkeeper Sebastian Ramirez made the save.
- Both sides began to lock in defensively after the frantic start, with only limited chances the remainder of the half.
- In the second half, the Toreros started quickly and were rewarded for their efforts.
- A ball into the box by Mason Tunbridge made its way to Ross Johnstone, who delivered a perfect, straight-line pass to the feet of Kanaan, who buried a first-time shot to give the Toreros a 1-0 lead.
- The Gaels fought for a response, as Wade Muttitt hit the post in the 66th minute.
- Saint Mary's finally struck for a goal in the 72nd minute, as Jude Zamora hit a shot from well outside the box that eluded Ludosan and tied the match at 1-1.
- However, the Toreros would not be denied, responding just minutes later.
- After a Tunbridge shot was denied by Ramirez in tight, he stayed with the play and just seconds later, ran a give-and-go with Rhys Gourdie, who buried a shot from outside the box in the 78th minute to take the lead for good.
- The Gaels would get only one more shot on goal the rest of the way, but Ludosan made the stop to secure the win.
