Women’s Soccer Drops Season Finale at No. 23 Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The San Diego women's soccer program (1-15-2, 0-7-1 WCC) turned in a terrific effort against a top-25 program, but fell just short of a win, dropping the 2023 season finale at No. 23 Santa Clara (12-4-2, 5-2-0 WCC), 2-0 on Wednesday night at Stevens Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Toreros faced early adversity, as Santa Clara scored in the fifth minute to build an early 1-0 lead.
  • From there, the two sides traded scoring opportunities, as Talei Moodie had a shot saved in the 11th minute.
  • Santa Clara earned a penalty kick later in the half and despite Sophine Kevorkian guessing correctly, the ball slipped by for a 2-0 Santa Clara lead.
  • The Toreros turned up the heat in the second half, keeping the high-powered Santa Clara offense at bay.
  • In the 52nd minute, Josefine Schlichting nearly struck again from long range, catching the Santa Clara goalkeeper slightly off her line and forcing her to hustle back and tip the shot over the bar.
  • Despite the Toreros nearly matching the Broncos across every stat category in the second half, they were unable to cut into the deficit, ultimately settling for the first half score line of 2-0.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Kevorkian set a new single season saves record at USD, beating her previous school record of 96 set last season, by finishing the year with 97.
  • Kylie Perez crossed 1,000 minutes on the season, giving the Toreros a third consecutive season with at least one freshman recording over 1,000 minutes played.
  • The game marked the closest result against a top-25 opponent in a true road game since 2019 for the Toreros.
