Football Drops Overtime Decision to St. Thomas at Torero Stadium

Toreros fall to Tommies by 20-14 margin on Saturday afternoon

SAN DIEGO — San Diego football (3-7, 3-4 PFL) scored a game-tying touchdown with 12:55 remaining in the fourth quarter on Saturday afternoon but could not hang on to secure a Senior Day win over St. Thomas, falling to the Tommies (7-3, 6-1 PFL) by a 20-14 margin in overtime at Torero Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. Thomas struck first with a five-yard touchdown pass in the final seconds of the first quarter to establish an early 7-0 lead.
  • San Diego answered back as the second half wound down with a short touchdown strike of its own, tying the game at 7-7 after quarterback Dom Nankil found tight end Peyton Smith in the endzone from six yards out.
  • The Tommies utilized a 37-yard rushing touchdown to reestablish its lead with less than a minute left in the second quarter, sending the Toreros to the break trailing 14-7.
  • Running back Isaiah Williams punched in a three-yard rushing touchdown at the 12:55 mark in the third quarter, knotting the score at 14-14.
  • USD missed a 28-yard field goal attempt in the first possession of overtime and St. Thomas capitalized on its ensuing field position, scoring a game-winning, 16-yard rushing touchdown on third down to earn a 20-14 victory.
TORERO TIDBITS UP NEXT
The Toreros will conclude their 2023 season next weekend, when they travel to Deland, Florida to take on Stetson. Kickoff on Saturday at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium is set for 9 a.m. PST.
