SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (2-0, 0-0 WCC) built an early advantage and never looked back, downing Portland State (1-1, 0-0 Big Sky), 71-43, on Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Kylie Horstmeyer led all scorers for the second straight game with a career-high 18 points, while
Kasey Neubert recorded her second consecutive double-double at 16 points and 12 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Toreros came out of the gate immediately on the very first play, winning the tip-off and getting a Horstmeyer layup just seconds later to open the afternoon.
- San Diego opened on an 11-0 run, led by four points from Harsimran Kaur and a three pointer by Jess Finney.
- Horstmeyer and Kaur would continue their hot starts to the game, keeping Portland State at an arms-length.
- The Toreros ultimately would not relinquish the lead the entire game.
- Despite Portland State cutting the lead to seven, the Toreros would not be affected, as Courtney Wristen recorded six second quarter points.
- As the game carried on, the strength of Neubert and the height of the Toreros played a role, as the defense locked down the Vikings in all facets of the game.
- The Vikings would make just four field goals and only one three-pointer in the second half, shooting just under 15 percent.
- Meanwhile, the Toreros offense improved their high-level shooting even more, while Neubert made the Vikings pay on the glass with a season-high 12 rebounds.
- The lead ballooned to as high as 28, as players like Dylan Horton and Malia Tharpe got in on the scoring with multiple baskets apiece to extend the lead even further.
TORERO TIDBITS
- The Toreros have shot 52.5 percent or higher in back-to-back games to open the season. The team had only reached that threshold twice in the previous four seasons combined.

- Neubert tallied the eighth double-double of her career in the win.
- Kaur has scored in double figures in back-to-back games for the first time in her career.
