TUCSON, Ariz. – The San Diego women's basketball program (2-1, 0-0 WCC) held a third quarter lead but ultimately came up just short, falling 79-66 at Arizona (4-0, 0-0 PAC-12), on Tuesday night at the McKale Center.
Veronica Sheffey and
Dylan Horton each tallied 15 points to lead the Toreros, while
Kasey Neubert recorded her third straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both sides took time to get their offenses going, but Horton led the Toreros out of the gate.
- Horton scored the first six points of the game for the Toreros and jump-started the offense.
- Arizona ended the first quarter on an 8-0 run, but the Toreros would not go away.
- Harsimran Kaur and Neubert both started to assert themselves on the glass and each got multiple baskets to pull within two at 29-27.
- Arizona would take a 35-28 lead into halftime, but the Toreros came out of the break with energy.
- San Diego opened on a 12-4 run, as Sheffey notched the first two baskets, before Horton notched seven straight points to give San Diego a 40-39 lead.
- However, Arizona answered with a 12-0 run of their own almost immediately.
- San Diego made one final run to cut the lead to five early in the fourth quarter, as Horton hung through the contact to secure a basket plus a foul.
- Despite that, the Wildcats got enough offense down the stretch to pull away from San Diego for good.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Neubert tallied the ninth double-double of her career in the loss and fifth in her last six games dating back to last season.
- San Diego held Arizona to a season-low three-point percentage of 15.4 percent (2-for-13).
