DELAND, FL — After suffering a tough overtime loss to St. Thomas last weekend, San Diego football (3-7, 3-4 PFL) will look to end the 2023 season on a high note this Saturday against Stetson as Pioneer Football League play continues at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST STETSON
• USD is a perfect 9-0 against the Hatters all-time.

• The last time the two teams met was on Nov. 20, 2021, when San Diego beat to Stetson by a score of 41-16 at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium.

• Due to circumstances caused by Hurricane Ian, San Diego's home matchup against Stetson in 2022 was canceled and not rescheduled.

LAST TIME OUT –  St. Thomas 20, San Diego 14 (OT) - Torero Stadium
• San Diego scored a game-tying touchdown with 12:55 remaining in the fourth quarter last Saturday afternoon but could not hang on to secure a Senior Day win over St. Thomas, falling to the Tommies by a 20-14 margin in overtime at Torero Stadium.

How It Happened
• St. Thomas struck first with a five-yard touchdown pass in the final seconds of the first quarter to establish an early 7-0 lead.

• San Diego answered back as the second half wound down with a short touchdown strike of its own, tying the game at 7-7 after quarterback Dom Nankil found tight end Peyton Smith in the endzone from six yards out.

• The Tommies utilized a 37-yard rushing touchdown to reestablish its lead with less than a minute left in the second quarter, sending the Toreros to the break trailing 14-7.

• Running back Isaiah Williams punched in a three-yard rushing touchdown at the 12:55 mark in the third quarter, knotting the score at 14-14.

• USD missed a 28-yard field goal attempt in the first possession of overtime and St. Thomas capitalized on its ensuing field position, scoring a game-winning, 16-yard rushing touchdown on third down to earn a 20-14 victory.

• Williams paced the San Diego offense with 163 rushing yards.

• Wide receiver Josh Heverly led the USD receivers with 43 yards on four catches.

• Linebacker Garrett Carney had a team-high 10 total tackles, including five solo and 2.5 for losses.

• Eric Haney had the Toreros' lone interception on the afternoon, which marked his second of 2023.

• Smith's touchdown was the first of his career.

GARRETT CARNEY (LINEBACKER):
• Leads USD with 70 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for losses and 1.5 sacks
• Has notched two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries this season and has forced a fumble
• Is set to graduate with a degree in Computer Science

JOSHUA HONG (SAFETY):
• Appeared in 20 games over  four years while compiling 71 total tackles, including 46 solo and 7.5 for losses
• As a junior in 2022 he led the Toreros with two interceptions
• Earned a bachelor's degree in physics from USD and is now completing a graduate certificate in Coaching Leadership

TREVOR KAN (CORNERBACK)
• Joined the Toreros as a freshman in 2020 and has appeared in six games in his four-year career
• Was named to the Pioneer Football League's All-Academic Honor Roll as a junior
• Is set to graduate from USD with bachelors' degrees in both Business Administration and Marketing

MARK MAHONEY (OFFENSIVE LINEMAN)
• Has appeared in 12 games for the Toreros across his four-year career, including nine of USD's ten games in 2023
• Is a two-time Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll selection
• Is set to earn an undergraduate degree in Physics, which he completed alongside a Business Administration Minor

LIAM MCHALE (TIGHT END)
• Joined the Toreros after spending three seasons at Georgetown
• Since coming to San Diego he has appeared in eight games and has totaled 42 receiving yards
• Is set to graduate with a Master's in Business Administration

NOAH MILES (CORNERBACK)
• Has appeared in four games across his four-year San Diego career, including appearances against Valparaiso, La Verne, Princeton, and Dayton
• Is set to graduate with a degree in Behavioral Neuroscience and a Minor in Film Studies

RE-AL MITCHELL (ALL-PURPOSE)
• Joined USD in 2022 after spending time at Iowa State and Temple and quickly became one of the PFL's most fearsome offensive players before earning all-conference first team honors a year ago
• A true triple threat on offense, Mitchell has scored two touchdowns this season while compiling 362 receiving yards, 199 rushing yards, and 22 passing yards.
• He is set to graduate with a Master's Degree in Leadership Studies

JAGGER PAGANO (LINEBACKER)
• Has been a constant for the Toreros on defense for the last four seasons, compiling 82 total tackles, 43 solo tackles, 5.5 tackles for losses, 2.5 sacks, and one fumble recovery
• Was named to the PFL Academic Honor Roll as a freshman and was an All-PFL Honorable Mention in 2022
• Is set to graduate with degrees in both Business Administration and Real Estate

TREY PRICE (OFFENSIVE LINEMAN)
• Joined the Toreros after spending time at American River College and Nevada and has been a key fixture on the USD offensive line ever since, appearing in 21 games across two seasons
• Is set to earn a graduate certificate from USD in Coaching Leadership

JACOB SAEWITZ (DEFENSIVE LINEMAN)
• Has appeared in 24 games across three seasons in San Diego and has totaled 62 tackles, a remarkable 20 tackles for losses, and ten sacks

AMIR WALLACE (CORNERBACK)
• Has been a defensive force since joining the Toreros as a freshman five years ago, appearing in 38 games while racking up 105 total tackles, 73 solo tackles, 27 pass deflections, four interceptions, and two fumble recoveries
• Was named the PFL Defensive Player of the Week on October 29
• Is set to graduate with a degree in Supply Chain Management

ZAMIR WALLACE (CORNERBACK)
Has also been a defensive force for the Toreros over the last five years, appearing in 36 games while racking up 61 total tackles, 46 solo tackles, 15 pass deflections, five interceptions, and three forced fumbles
• On November 5th, he joined his twin Amir in receiving a PFL Defensive Player of the Week selection, making it back-to-back weekly conference honors for the Wallace brothers
• Is set to graduate with a degree in Psychology and a minor in Communications

RASHAAN WARD (WIDE RECEIVER)
• Has been a constant for the Toreros across the last five seasons, playing in 29 games while totaling 165 receiving yards and 34 rushing yards
• Is set to graduate with an undergraduate degree in Supply Chain Management

JAYDEN WICKWARE (LINEBACKER)
• Joined USD after graduating from Princeton, and quickly became one of the Toreros' most dynamic defensive players
• In his single season in San Diego he has compiled 41 tackles, 10.5 tackles for losses, six sacks, and one interception
• Is set to earn a graduate certificate in Coaching Leadership from USD

ISAIAH WILLIAMS (RUNNING BACK)
• Since joining the Toreros from Southern Utah University he has become a dominant force for San Diego on offense, racking up a team-high 941 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns alongside 117 receiving yards and one touchdown reception
