RENO, Nev. – The San Diego women's basketball program (3-4, 0-0 WCC) erased a double-digit deficit, but could not hang on, falling 76-63 at Nevada (5-2, 0-0 MWC) on Wednesday afternoon at the Lawlor Events Center.
Veronica Sheffey and
Courtney Wristen each tallied career-highs in points, as Sheffey led the way with 18 points and four assists, while Wristen tallied 17 points and eight rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Toreros struggled on the offensive end early in the game, as they didn't record their first field goal until the 4:27 mark of the first quarter.
- Looking for a jolt, the Toreros found it in freshman Malia Tharpe, who came off the bench to score four points and add a rebound in the last three minutes of the quarter, as the Toreros would trail 15-8 at the end of the frame.
- Nevada extended their lead to 10 at 24-14, before the Toreros offense began to click.
- A 13-2 run by the Toreros that was led by Sheffey and Wristen helped the Toreros take their first lead at 27-26 and would keep them within one at the break.
- Despite the run to close the gap, the Wolfpack slowly began to pull away from the Toreros.
- A big third quarter from Sheffey, in which she scored nine points, withstanding, the Toreros found themselves in a seven-point hole after the third.
- The lead for Nevada began to balloon from there and late threes from Wristen and Jess Finney weren't enough to break down the advantage, as Nevada went on to secure a 13-point win.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Sheffey, Wristen and Kylie Horstmeyer combined for just over 76 percent of the Toreros points on the day.
- Tharpe also finished with a career-best, recording six points.
