LOS ANGELES – Despite a strong first quarter, the San Diego women's basketball program (3-5, 0-0 WCC) could not hang on against one of the nation's top teams, falling 89-58 at No. 6 USC (7-0, 0-0 PAC-12) on Sunday afternoon at the Galen Center.
Kylie Horstmeyer matched a career-high with 18 points, while
Harsimran Kaur added 10 points and seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Toreros came out of the gate with energy, matching the high-level play of the Trojans.
- Horstmeyer and Kaur each scored four points early in the period and the Toreros played to a 17-17 tie, before a 6-0 run by USC to end the first.
- That run continued to expand for the Trojans who quickly turned the 17-17 tie into a 36-20 lead with a 19-3 run.
- The lead ballooned to 20 at halftime for the Trojans.
- A quick start in the half with four points from Veronica Sheffey and a basket by Malia Tharpe provided some life, but the Trojans quickly put a stop to the run.
- The Toreros were unable to draw any closer, as the Trojans continued to extend their lead throughout the remainder of the game.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Claire Gallagher made her long-awaited return to action for the first time since Nov. 26, 2022, returning from a knee injury.
- Sheffey recorded a career-high seven assists, while Wristen added a career-high 10 rebounds.
