Men’s Soccer Vies for WCC Title on Senior Day

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego men's soccer program (10-4-3, 4-1-1 WCC) will play for a WCC title and guaranteed spot in the NCAA Tournament, hosting Gonzaga (3-8-6, 1-4-1 WCC) on Friday at 7 p.m., in Torero Stadium.
 
Friday night is also senior night, as the Toreros will honor Ryan Cedeno, Trevor Dillon, Matteo Gasperoni, Rhys Gourdie, Ross Johnstone, Kai Peterson and Owen Wiebe.
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Toreros got one step closer to a WCC title, downing Pacific 4-0 on Nov. 4.
  • Mason Tunbridge shined, factoring in on three of the four goals with two goals and the primary assist on Gourdie's breakthrough goal in the 50th minute.
  • His impact all came in the first 15 minutes of the second half, as San Diego rapidly pulled away thanks to his efforts.
  • Samy Kanaan also tallied his sixth goal of the season, while Cesar Bahena added two assists.
 
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • San Diego is seeking to become the WCC's first repeat champion since Saint Mary's in 2018 and 2019.
  • The Toreros currently control their own destiny, standing in a tie for first place with Santa Clara and holding a tiebreaker advantage with one game left in the regular season.
  • The Toreros have an RPI of 31, as they make a push for a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.
  • Tunbridge is the reigning WCC Offensive Player of the Week and was also selected to a pair of national team of the weeks, from College Soccer News and TopDrawerSoccer.
  • The Toreros rank 15th in the nation in total assists (38), while also ranking 35th in total points (96).  
  • In addition, the Toreros rank 15th nationally in assists per game (2.24) and 35th in points per game (5.65).
  • San Diego has registered seven shutouts this season, matching last season's total.  
 
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Tunbridge now has 40 points in his last 38 games, dating back to Nov. 5, 2021 against Pacific.
  • Tunbridge also ranks 33rd in the nation in assists (seven) and 50th in the nation in points (21).
  • San Diego is undefeated when scoring two or more goals and scoring first so far this season.
  • The Toreros have only lost two games in the last three seasons when they lead at halftime.
