NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The San Diego women's basketball program (4-6, 0-0 WCC) delivered a wire-to-wire victory on Sunday, defeating CSUN (2-6, 0-0 Big West), 85-61, at the Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Jess Finney led the Toreros with 14 points on a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from beyond the arc, while six players scored in double figures.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Right out of the gate, the Toreros asserted themselves in the paint and built an early advantage.
- The Toreros built an early 8-2 lead and never looked back, dispersing the scoring throughout the lineup.
- CSUN cut the lead to 10-7, but San Diego answered with a 14-3 run led by multiple three pointers by Finney.
- The Toreros turned up the heat even more in the second quarter, dominating on both sides of the ball and winning the quarter 19-7.
- An additional 15-5 run by the Toreros allowed the lead to balloon to 39-17, as Courtney Wristen hit two three pointers and Kasey Neubert added two baskets.
- The second half was more of the same, as the Toreros shot 69.23 percent from the field and expanded the lead to a height of 38 points.
- Finney and Wristen each continued to shine from the three-point line, while Neubert returned to double figures for the first time since her brief injury.
- CSUN chipped away at the lead in the fourth quarter and won the quarter by 14 points, but the Toreros still shot over 50 percent to maintain their big lead and secured the victory.
TORERO TIDBITS
- The Toreros hit a season-best seven three pointers in the win. The Toreros top three-point showing from last season was also against CSUN.
- San Diego has now won 11 consecutive games against the Big West, dating back to 2019.
- The Toreros dominated in the paint, recording 40 points and 23 second chance points, led by double figure showings from Neubert, Wristen and Harsimran Kaur.
- Finney continues to dominate CSUN since joining the Toreros, averaging 15.5 points per game in two matchups, going 9-for-12 from three-point range.
- Veronica Sheffey now has back-to-back games of eight assists each, after never previously reaching the threshold.
