SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (4-8, 0-0 WCC) pushed for a late rally but were unable to overcome Boise State (9-4, 0-0 MWC) falling 62-54 on Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Veronica Sheffey led the Toreros with 15 points and five assists, while
Kasey Neubert notched a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For much of the first half of the game, it was the Toreros against Boise State's Natalie Pasco.
- Pasco tallied 12 points in the opening quarter, while the Toreros spread the offense.
- Harsimran Kaur was effective from the start, with four points and two rebounds, but the Toreros trailed 21-13 through the first.
- Both defenses turned up the heat in the second quarter, as no side shot better than 31 percent.
- However, the Toreros could get the deficit no lower than five in the period and a late three pointer by the Broncos gave them a nine-point halftime advantage.
- San Diego started quickly in the third, as Sheffey added a pair of baskets and cut the lead to five once again.
- However, Boise State and Pasco expanded the lead behind a pair of three pointers to increase the advantage to 13.
- Sheffey and Jess Finney tried to will the team back in the game, as Finney nailed a pair of baskets, but the Toreros couldn't break down the Broncos advantage.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Neubert tallied her fourth double-double of the season in just eight games played.
- Her 13 rebounds were also the most by a Torero this season.
- Finney (seven) and Kaur (10) each notched career-highs on the glass.
- Sheffey extended her double-digit point streak to four-straight with her team-leading 15 points.
