SAN DIEGO –
Veronica Sheffey's career-high was not enough, as the San Diego women's basketball program (3-6, 0-0 WCC) came up just shy against San Diego State (6-4, 0-0 MWC) on Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
Sheffey led the way with a career-high in points (23) and assists (eight), while
Dylan Horton added 10 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Despite a sluggish start by the Toreros, who fell into an early 11-2 hole, the offense clicked in the opening half.
- After five points from Jess Finney to stop the run, the Toreros came together behind the red-hot play of Sheffey.
- Sheffey tallied eight consecutive points from the end of the first quarter to the second, pulling the Toreros within two with 7:33 left in the first half.
- San Diego State took a 28-22 lead, but the Toreros answered with a 13-3 run as Sheffey added to what became a 19-point first half.
- San Diego's halftime lead ballooned to seven points early in the third quarter, but the Aztecs chipped into the advantage throughout the remainder of the quarter.
- Sheffey and Horton kept the offense afloat and after a layup by Kylie Horstmeyer, the Toreros led by three with 9:02 remaining in the game.
- The Aztecs answered with a 10-2 run and would not relinquish the lead, despite by a late three pointer from Horstmeyer to cut the lead to three with seconds remaining.
TORERO TIDBITS
- The Toreros hit a season-high six three pointers on the evening.
- Sheffey becomes the first Torero to pass 100 points this season and is averaging 13.9 points per game over her last seven games.
