PORTLAND, OR – The University of San Diego men's tennis team improved to 4-0 in WCC play on Friday, defeating Portland on the road, 5-2.
The Toreros clinched the doubles point with wins at No. 3 (
Stian Klaassen/
Marvin Schaber) and No. 1 (
Iiro Vasa/
Sacchitt Sharrma).
In singles, Vasa increased the overall lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 1. Freshman
Oliver Tarvet remained perfect in conference play with a comeback 4-6, 7-6, 6-1 win at No. 2.
The Pilots made it 3-2 with wins at No. 3 and No. 4, but USD answered by clinching the win at No. 6, as freshman
Neo Niedner registered a 7-5, 6-2 triumph. After dropping the first set,
Marvin Schaber came back at No. 5 to win 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.
"I am really proud of the focus and competitiveness this team showed today," said head coach
Ryan Keckley. "Portland is very well coached and understands how to win on their courts and make their opponents uncomfortable. It's not easy to come into this facility and make the necessary adjustments to have immediate success like we did during this 6-hour match. This is a great confidence booster heading into a tough matchup against Oregon Sunday."
San Diego improves to 6-3 (4-0 WCC), and will face Oregon on Sunday.
