Men’s Tennis Wins Fourth Straight With 4-2 Comeback at Oregon

EUGENE, OR – The University of San Diego men's tennis team won its fourth straight game on Sunday, earning a comeback 4-2 victory at Oregon.

The Ducks clinched the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, then extended their lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 1 singles.

San Diego answered with four straight singles wins. Redshirt freshman Stian Klaassen earned a 6-2, 7-6 win at No. 3, followed by redshirt junior Marvin Schaber at No. 5 (7-6, 6-4), freshman Oliver Tarvet at No. 2 (6-4, 3-6, 6-3), and redshirt junior Sacchitt Sharrma at No. 4 (4-6, 6-1, 7-6).

Freshman Neo Niedner's match at No. 6 went unfinished during a third set tiebreaker at 6-3, 2-6, 6-6.

"Great team win after a head scratching start to the match," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "We came out flat and did not match their pace and urgency during the doubles point. We were overwhelmed by how quick the ball came back in the indoor setting. We need to get back to the drawing board and work on our fundamental doubles play.

Looking at the matchups, I thought this would be a coin toss on every court, and it was going to be more about the intangibles than the tennis. We took four of the six first sets after being down early breaks in three of those four. Sacchitt stepped up in the second set and forced a third set which was massive for the scoreboard pressure.

Ollie, Neo and Sacchitt all entered the third sets roughly at the same time. Whoever captured 2 of the 3 matches would secure the win. It was Ollie Tarvet doing typical Ollie things who got the first point on the board for the boys. Sacchitt, after having two match points and not converting, rattled off an amazing tie break to win 7-6 in the third and clinch the road win. Proud of the fight and grit this young team continues to show on the road and at home!"

San Diego improves to 7-3 (4-0 WCC), and will host Tulsa on Friday.
