Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

#30 Men’s Tennis Falls to #35 Cal, 5-2

SAN DIEGO – The University of San Diego men's tennis team was edged by No. 35 California on Thursday, 5-2. Five out of six singles matches went to a third set in the three-and-a-half-hour clash.

The Toreros clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win at No. 1 (Iiro Vasa/Sacchitt Sharrma) and a 6-2 victory at No. 3 (Lambert Ruland/Marvin Schaber). Up until today, Cal had won every doubles point this season.

Cal took the first two singles matches at No. 1 and No. 5, but redshirt freshman Stian Klaassen tied the overall score at 2-2 with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 win at No. 3. The Bears answered with wins at No. 4, No. 6, and No. 2.

"One thing I've learned about this team is we are always going to compete," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "It's something we do very well for a young squad. Something we need to improve upon is the urgency within matches. We let our guard down in the beginning of singles after stealing a doubles point from an excellent doubles program. We can't afford to play into matches against teams of this caliber, especially at home. We will get back to work and prepare for an important upcoming road trip to Dallas."

San Diego drops to 7-4, and will face Old Dominion on Monday in Dallas.
