SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (12-10, 6-5 WCC) will play host to BYU (12-10, 7-4 WCC), on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., in the Jenny Craig Pavilion, with third place in the WCC hanging in the balance.
LAST TIME OUT
- San Diego earned a key, 67-54, road win at Saint Mary's last Saturday, as Ayanna Khalfani exploded for a career-high 20 points and nine rebounds to help San Diego sweep the season series with the Gaels.
- Kasey Neubert was also a key player in the win, registering her second double-double of the season at 12 points and 12 rebounds.
OPPONENT HISTORY
- After a 63-49 loss to the Cougars in Provo, Utah on Jan. 7, the Toreros are now 8-18 all-time against them and could face the Cougars for the final time on Saturday, as they are set to leave for the Big 12 next season.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- Handling the basketball remains one of the key factors for San Diego, who lead the WCC in turnover margin (1.91), while ranking third in turnovers forced per game (16.36).
- The Toreros continue to find success on the glass, ranking 33rd nationally in offensive rebounds per game (14.2).
- Neubert has been dominant on the glass in recent weeks, averaging 11.8 rebounds per game over her last four contests and 7.1 rebounds per game this season, which ranks fifth in the conference.
- Should her pace continue, it would be the highest per game average by a Torero since Patricia Brossmann (7.6 RPG) in the 2018-19 season.
- However, the Toreros will be tested, as they do battle with BYU's Lauren Gustin, the nation's leading rebounder at 16.5 rebounds per game.
- San Diego is hoping to jump out to an early lead, where they tend to have the most success. San Diego is 11-3 when leading or tied at halftime, while 1-7 when they trail. The team broke their 0-5 start when they trail with a 16-point comeback victory over Saint Mary's on Dec. 29.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Kiera Oakry has been adept at drawing contact all season and has gotten to the free throw line frequently, ranking second in the WCC and in the top-100 nationally in free throws made (88). As a unit, the Toreros lead the league in free throw attempts per game and makes per game.
- Myah Pace (1,036) is continuing her climb up the Toreros record books and sits in a tie with Sydney Hunter (1,036) for 19th on the all-time scoring list. Next up for Pace after Hunter is Morgan Woodrow (1,066) in 18th.
- In addition, Pace is 19 steals away from 250 in her career and ranks fourth all-time at San Diego, needing nine to match Amanda Rego (240) for third place.
- Pace is also eighth all-time in assists at 348 and needs 14 more to match Dominique Conners (362) for seventh.
- Neubert is closing in on 500 rebounds in her collegiate career between Hawai'I and San Diego, needing 44 rebounds to reach the threshold.
- WCC men's and women's basketball student-athletes will wear special shirts honoring the life and legacy of Bill Russell during pregame activities for the game.
