Toreros Dismantle No. 10 TCU at Lupton Stadium

James Sashin, San Diego bats dominate in 14-2 win over Horned Frogs

FORT WORTH, Texas — San Diego baseball on Friday night erupted for a stunning road win over one of the country's top teams, dismantling No. 10 TCU by a 14-2 margin at Lupton Stadium to begin its weekend series with the Horned Frogs (7-6, 0-0 Big 12) in dominant fashion.

Led by a season-high five RBIs from graduate catcher Andrew Semo (The Bishop's School) and two RBIs from three different players, the Toreros (6-6-1, 0-0 WCC) scored multiple runs in each of the game's first five innings to secure the win, plating three in the first, two in both the second and third, three in the fourth, and five in the fifth.

Redshirt junior right-hander James Sashin turned in his best start yet on the mound, holding TCU to just one run on six hits over a career-high six innings while striking out six and walking none for the first time in 2023.

No. 10 TCU is the highest-ranked opponent San Diego has defeated since February 16, 2017, when the Toreros took down No. 6 Vanderbilt at Fowler Park by a score of 3-2 in what marked their first game of that season.

Prior to Friday, USD had last beat a ranked team on May 21, 2022, when it bested No. 11 Gonzaga 7-4 at Fowler Park in its second-to-last regular-season game that year.

A RELENTLESS OFFENSIVE ATTACK
  • Semo, a transfer from Fordham, got the scoring started in the top of the first with a bases-clearing line-drive double to center field that gave USD an early 3-0 lead.
  • The Toreros added two more runs in the following frame on an RBI grounder from sophomore outfielder/left-handed pitcher Austin Smith (UC San Diego, Granite Hills High School) and a RBI double from junior utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School), making it 5-0.
  • San Diego again pushed two runs across in the top of the third, doing so when sophomore shortstop Justin DeCriscio brought home graduate transfer infielder James Arakawa (Pacific) and freshman infielder/designated hitter Jack Gurevitch on an RBI triple to extend the Torero advantage to 7-0.
  • USD kept on rolling in the fourth, scoring three times on a wild pitch (Peraza), a sacrifice fly (Semo), and an RBI double (Arakawa) to stretch its lead to 10-0.
  • The Toreros' final scoring frame proved to be their biggest one, as it saw them expand their advantage to 14-0 in the fifth inning on another RBI double from Peraza, a two-RBI double off the right-field fence from junior infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) that was nearly a home run, and an RBI single from Semo.
  • TCU plated a run in the bottom of the sixth and ninth on an RBI single and sacrifice fly but got no closer, earning USD a wire-to-wire 14-2 win over the tenth-ranked Horned Frogs at Lupton Stadium.
SASHIN'S BEST START YET
  • Sashin set the tone for the finest start of his college career thus far by striking out the side in the first.
  • He worked around a single and a throwing error in the bottom of the second, then set down the side in 1-2-3 fashion in the third.
  • The Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts native stranded a combined three runners in scoring position across the fourth and fifth before finally yielding a single run in the sixth after the leadoff hitter reached on a bunt single.
  • Freshman righties Tristan LaMaison and Peter Michael followed out of the bullpen and each tossed a single scoreless frame with one strikeout.
  • Redshirt sophomore Chase Minor closed the game out on the mound for USD and allowed a single run on a pair of walks despite not surrendering a hit, striking out a single batter in the process.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • DeCriscio paced the USD offense with a 3-for-5 performance that saw him both drive in and score two runs. He enters Saturday afternoon's action on a four-game hit streak and has hit safely in 11 of the Toreros 13 games so far in 2023.
  • Smith (2-for-6), Peraza (2-for-4), Semo (2-for-4), and Arakawa (2-for-4) all had two hits on Friday night.
  • Smith scored twice and drove in a run, Peraza doubled twice, scored three runs, drove in two more, and walked twice, Semo recorded a game and season-high five RBIs, and Arakawa both drove in a run and scored a run.
  • After beginning the season on an eight-game hit streak, Arakwawa has hit safely in 10 of the Toreros' 13 games in 2023.
  • Sim was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBIs, and a walk, missing his fourth home run of 2023 by mere feet.
  • Junior center fielder Dustin Allen had a hit for a second consecutive game, going 1-for-4 with a line-drive single and a run scored.
  • Freshman utility player Ian Blazier entered in the top of the seventh as a pinch hitter and notched his first career college hit, a line drive single back up the middle.
  • After walking five batters in each of his first two outings this season, Sashin has decreased his walk total in each subsequent start, issuing only two free passes on March 3 at Oregon before allowing none on Friday night.
  • Friday night's 14-2 victory over No. 10 TCU was the Toreros' first road win of 2023.
  • Their 14 runs on Friday was more than they scored in each of their first five road games combined and the most they've scored in an away game since April 18, 2022, when they hung 15 runs on crosstown rival San Diego State at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
