Sim, Rennie Shine in Close 3-1 Loss at No. 10 TCU

Toreros drop game two at Lupton Stadium on Saturday afternoon

FORT WORTH, Texas — Junior infielder Kevin Sim homered and graduate right-hander Garrett Rennie turned in a strong start on the mound, but San Diego baseball (6-7-1, 0-0 WCC) dropped the middle contest of its three-game series at No. 10 TCU on Saturday afternoon, falling by a close 3-1 margin to the Horned Frogs (8-6, 0-0 Big 12) at Lupton Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • TCU struck first for a run in the bottom of the first on a solo homer that snuck over the left field wall.
  • The Horned Frogs added on in the bottom of the third with an RBI single through the right side, making it 2-0 in the home team's favor.
  • After the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings saw both teams' bats go quiet, Sim (Torrey Pines High School) got the Toreros on the board in the top of the seventh when he hammered a line-drive solo shot to left field.
  • TCU responded with a run in the bottom of the eighth on a softly hit RBI infield single. Sophomore shortstop Justin DeCriscio ranged to his right, deep into the 5.5 hole to keep the grounder from reaching the outfield, but had no play as the Horned Frog runner raced home.
  • San Diego brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the top of the ninth after junior utility player Angelo Peraza singled and Sim reached on an error by the TCU shortstop, but the Toreros could not complete the comeback, suffering a close 3-1 defeat to the tenth-ranked Horned Frogs on Saturday afternoon at Lupton Stadium.
ON THE MOUND
  • Rennie began the game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in a solid start, allowing just two runs across six innings while scattering three hits, striking out five, and walking only one.
  • He was relieved by sophomore righty Morgan Lunceford, who threw just six pitches in the seventh but surrendered both a single and double.
  • Robinson entered in place of Lunceford after two batters and deftly extinguished the TCU scoring threat.
  • Aided by a 5-2 fielder's choice on a ground ball that saw junior third baseman Jack Costello cut down the lead Horned Frogs runner at home with an accurate relay to graduate catcher Andrew Semo (The Bishop's School), Robinson stranded runners at the corners for a scoreless seventh that kept the USD deficit at just one.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Peraza paced the USD offense on Saturday with a 2-for-4 performance, marking the second consecutive game in which he has recorded multiple hits after also going 2-for-4 on Friday night.
  • Sim was 1-for-4 with a solo home run and was responsible for the Toreros' lone run scored and RBI on Saturday.
  • Sophomore outfielder/left-handed pitcher Austin Smith (UC San Diego, Granite Hills High School) drew USD's lone walk of the game.
UP NEXT
After prevailing by a 14-2 margin in game one, the Toreros will look to take the three-game series at No. 10 TCU tomorrow afternoon. First pitch at Lupton Stadium in Sunday's series finale is set for 1:00 p.m. CST.
