RIVERSIDE, Calif. — San Diego baseball (8-10-1, 2-1 WCC) scored multiple runs in four different innings on Monday but could not overtake California Baptist (10-10, 3-3 WAC), dropping a tough 17-9 decision to the Lancers at Totman Stadium as it played its fourth game in four days.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- California Baptist got the scoring started in the bottom of the fourth with a grand slam.
- The Toreros immediately answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third on a two-RBI single from junior utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) to make it 4-2, but the Lancers hit back with seven runs in the bottom of the frame on a two-run homer, an RBI single, a two-RBI double, a bases-loaded walk, and an RBI single.
- An RBI single from junior centerfielder Dustin Allen and a sacrifice fly from junior infielder Kevin Sim (Torrey Pines High School) in the top of the fourth cut the deficit to 11-4 before CBU added another solo homer in the bottom of the fifth, making it 12-4 after five innings of play.
- San Diego scored three runs in the top of the sixth (RBI singles from sophomore shortstop Justin DeCriscio and freshman utility player Ben Haar and an RBI double from Peraza) and two more in the top of the seventh (a two-RBI single from Haar) to cut the deficit to just three runs at 12-9 but got no closer, suffering a 17-9 loss to California Baptist at Totman Stadium after the Lancers pushed across five in the bottom of the eighth on a two-RBI double, an RBI bunt single, and a USD throwing error.
