Allen, Gurevitch Homer in Loss at Santa Clara

USD jumps out to early lead but falls to Broncos by 10-6 margin at newly renovated Schott Stadium

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Diego baseball (8-11-1, 2-2 WCC) jumped out to an early lead and launched a pair of key home runs on Friday night but could not hang on to secure the victory against Santa Clara, suffering a tough 10-6 loss to the Broncos (12-5, 3-1 WCC) at Stephen Schott Stadium.

TOREROS STRIKE FIRST, ALLEN, GUREVITCH GO YARD
  • Graduate transfer catcher Andrew Semo (Fordham, The Bishop's School) got the scoring started in the top of the second when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home sophomore outfielder/left-handed pitcher Austin Smith (UC San Diego, Granite Hills High School).
  • Junior centerfielder Dustin Allen added on later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to right-center field, plating sophomore shortstop Justin DeCriscio to make it 2-0 in favor of USD.
  • Santa Clara answered with a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the third, knotting the score at two runs apiece.
  • Allen followed by providing an immediate San Diego response in the top of the fourth, launching a towering three-run homer over Schott Stadium's right-field wall to score DeCriscio and Smith and give the Toreros a 5-2 advantage.
  • The Broncos fought back with a four-run top of the fifth (a two-RBI single and a two-RBI double) before freshman infielder/designated hitter Jack Gurevitch hit a 2-1 fastball off the batter's eye in the top of the sixth for a game-tying solo shot that made it 6-6.
  • USD and SCU remained tied until the bottom of the eighth, when Santa Clara scored four runs on a pair of two-RBI doubles to establish a 10-6 lead it would not relinquish.
ON THE MOUND
  • Redshirt junior righty James Sashin started the game on the mound for San Diego and threw 4.2 innings, surrendering six runs on 11 hits while walking two and striking out four.
  • He was relieved by junior right-hander Ivran Romero (Poway High School), who worked his way through three scoreless innings out of the bullpen before surrendering four runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • DeCriscio led the USD offense with a 2-for-4 performance and two runs scored on his 20th birthday.
  • Allen was 1-for-4 with a run scored and tied the game high with four RBIs.
  • Gurevitch was 1-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI, and a walk.
  • Allen's fourth-inning three-run blast was his first of the 2023 season (the third of his career) and Gurevitch's sixth-inning solo shot was the first of his college career.
