SPOKANE, WA – Clinched by redshirt junior Marvin Schaber at No. 5 singles, the No. 27 University of San Diego men's tennis team earned a road conference win at Gonzaga, 4-3.
 
The Bulldogs grabbed the tight doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The Toreros fell 13-11 in the tiebreaker on court three with five match points.
 
Freshman Neo Niedner quickly tied the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6. Redshirt junior Sacchitt Sharrma later tied it at 2-2 with a win at No. 4 in straight sets, followed by freshman Oliver Tarvet at No. 2.
 
After Gonzaga tied the match back up at 3-3, it came down to No. 5 singles. Beginning in the second set, Schaber went on a 9-0 run from to seal the win.
 
"Great team win on the road against an under ranked Gonzaga squad today," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "This team finished top-60 last year and did not lose a starter, so we knew the match would come down to a few moments. Gonzaga did a great job providing an awesome home environment bringing out 100 plus fans which made the match that much more exciting.
 
Again, we had match points in doubles and let opportunities slide through our fingers. We need to believe in ourselves and capitalize on those chances as our doubles has improved tremendously over the course of the spring.
 
Sacchitt, Ollie and Neo did their job and got us on the board in singles. All eyes came down to Marvin when the match went to 3-3. He embraced the moment and played within himself. He rattled off 9 straight games to solidify the win for his teammates. Proud of Marv for handling the big stage like a senior should!"
 
San Diego improves to 13-5 (5-0 WCC), and will travel to BYU next Saturday.
