TUCSON, Ariz. – The San Diego softball program (13-20-1, 0-0 WCC) battled throughout the evening, but could not overcome No. 20 Arizona (22-12, 3-6 PAC-12), falling 6-0, on Friday night at Hillenbrand Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- While the Torero offense got started quickly with a leadoff single by Izzy Owen, the Wildcats offense did the same.
- The Wildcats were able to score three runs apiece in the opening two innings, building a quick 6-0 lead.
- The Toreros would not go away quietly, keeping the Wildcat offense in check the remainder of the game.
- Courtney Rose settled down and would end up going a complete six innings, striking out four Wildcats.
- San Diego would have its chances to break through, beginning with a leadoff double from Arisa Tovar in the second inning. However, the Wildcats escaped unscathed.
- In the fourth, Joecellia Roberts and Tovar drew back-to-back walks to set up Emma Giaime.
- The freshman nearly drove in a run, but was thwarted by a sensational over-the-shoulder catch by the Wildcats shortstop to force a tough-luck double play at second base.
- Mikalyn Emanuelli gave the Toreros one more chance to break through in the fifth inning, with a single, before advancing to second on a wild pitch, but was left stranded on the base paths.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Emanuelli extended her on-base streak to 11 consecutive games with a single in tonight's game.
- Tovar reached base twice on the night. The sophomore has reached multiple times in three of her last four games.
