EUGENE, Ore. — A trio of San Diego baseball freshmen turned in key contributions both on the mound and at the plate on Sunday, but the Toreros (5-5-1, 0-0 WCC) fell in their series finale at Oregon (8-3, 0-0 Pac-12), dropping a 5-1 decision to the Ducks at PK Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After Oregon got on the board first with a solo home run in the contest's opening frame, freshman infielder Chris Esquivel (La Jolla Country Day School) helped USD strike back in the top of the second, driving in junior utility player Angelo Peraza from third with an opposite-field sacrifice fly to knot the score at 1-1.
- The Ducks responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the second to re-take the lead, then added on with one in the third and two more in the seventh to secure a 5-1 victory.
ON THE MOUND
- Sophomore righty Morgan Luceford started Sunday afternoon's game on the mound for USD and set forth four innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five.
- He was relieved by freshman right-hander Aídan Gonzalez, who tossed two scoreless innings, working around a hit and a walk with a pair of strikeouts.
- Redshirt junior righty Ryan Robinson threw the seventh and allowed two runs on two hits while striking out one.
- Redshirt freshman right-hander Nick Suspenzi closed the game out for USD and put together a second consecutive scoreless outing to begin his Torero career, this time tossing a scoreless eighth while working around a bunt single.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Peraza led the San Diego offense with a single and a run scored.
- Freshman infielder/designated hitter Jack Gurevitch notched a single, and sophomore shortstop Justin DeCriscio doubled with two outs in the top of the ninth.
- DeCriscio is batting an even .300 on the year and has hit safely in all but two of the Toreros' 11 games so far in 2023.
- After missing all of 2022 due to injury, Suspenzi haș yet to allow a run this season across his first two college innings pitched. He has surrendered just one hit in that span and has neither struck out or walked a batter.
- Sunday afternoon's game was moved from 12:05 p.m. to 2:05 p.m. due to inclement weather in the Eugene area.
- After Gonzalez walked the first batter he faced in the bottom of the fifth on six pitches, a 36-minute weather delay due to heavy rain and snow at PK Park paused Sunday's contest.
- When it resumed, the freshman set the next three Ducks he faced down in order, then came back out to throw a scoreless sixth.
