CORVALLIS, Ore. — San Diego baseball (5-6-1, 0-0 WCC) jumped out to a 2-0 lead and added a run in the top of the ninth but could not hang on for a win on Tuesday afternoon at No. 25 Oregon State, dropping a 9-4 decision to the Beavers (10-2, 0-0 Pac-12) at Goss Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After sophomore shortstop Justin DeCriscio reached on a throwing error by his Oregon counterpart to begin the top of the third inning, fellow sophomore Austin Smith (outfielder/left-handed pitcher) gave USD an early lead by placing an RBI double just inside the left field foul line.
- A batter later, junior utility player Angelo Peraza (St. Augustine High School) dropped down a perfect bunt single just past the pitcher's mound, advancing Smith to third.
- Junior outfielder/third baseman Jack Costello followed with a productive at-bat, plating Smith when he sent a RBI double play ball up the middle to bring home Smith and give the Toreros a 2-0 advantage.
- Oregon State immediately answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the third, tying the game with both an RBI double and single before pulling ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth with another RBI double.
- San Diego fought back to tie it at three in the top of the fifth when Peraza plated junior centerfielder Dustin Allen with a sacrifice fly, but the deadlock was short-lived.
- The Beavers retook the lead in the bottom of the frame on a solo home run and yet another RBI double to make it 5-3, then added on with another run in the sixth (a solo homer), and three more in the eighth (a bases-clearing triple) for a 9-3 advantage.
- USD cut the deficit to five in the top of the ninth on Peraza's second sacrifice fly (and Allen's second run scored) of the game but got no closer, suffering a 9-4 defeat to Oregon State at Goss Stadium on Tuesday.
ON THE MOUND
- Junior right-handed pitcher Ivran Romero started Tuesday's game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in four innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out three.
- He was followed by freshman lefty Mikiah Negrete, who surrendered three earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two.
- Redshirt sophomore Drake Frize was next out of the bullpen and set forth 1.1 innings, setting down Oregon State in order in the bottom of the seventh on just nine pitches before giving up two earned runs on a walk with a single strikeout in the eighth.
- Smith (UC San Diego, Granite Hills High School) rounded out the Toreros' pitching efforts on Tuesday, allowing one run on two hits while striking out a batter and walking none after taking over for Frize.

- Both of his runs batted in on Tuesday were sacrifice flies that scored Allen.
