SAN DIEGO — Four runs from Cal State Northridge (24-11, 10-5 Big West) in the top of the eighth inning on Tuesday night dealt San Diego baseball (18-20-1, 11-7 WCC) a 7-4 defeat at Fowler Park as it completed its second-to-last midweek non-conference matchup of 2023.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Matadors struck for a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on a bases-loaded hit by pitch and walk.
- The Toreros immediately answered in the bottom of the frame with an RBI triple from Dustin Allen and an RBI groundout from Angelo Peraza to tie the score at 2-2, where it remained until the top of the eighth.
- CSUN plated four runs that inning via two bases-loaded hit by pitches and a two-RBI single to pull ahead by a 6-2 margin, but USD again responded with a pair of runs, scoring twice on an RBI single from Austin Smith and an RBI double from Will Worthington to cut the deficit to 6-4.
- After a RBI double in the top of the ninth extended the Matadors' lead, San Diego brought the game's tying run to the plate in the bottom half of the frame but could not complete a comeback.
ON THE MOUND
- James Sashin led the San Diego pitching staff on Tuesday night with 2.1 scoreless frames.

- Peraza and Semo both drew two walks, with Peraza's free passes marking his team-leading 26th and 27th of 2023.
- Sashin had a team-high four strikeouts.
