LOS ANGELES — San Diego baseball (19-20-1, 12-7 WCC) on Friday night erupted for a dominant win over the West Coast Conference's top team, utilizing an explosive performance at the plate and a complete performance on the mound to dismantle first-place Loyola Marymount (21-18, 14-5 WCC) for a convincing 11-1 win at Page Stadium.
EARLY AND OFTEN
- The Toreros struck first for an early lead and never looked back, scoring three times in the top of the first via a towering two-run homer from Jack Gurevitch and a sacrifice fly from Dustin Allen.
- In the top of the fifth, Ariel Armas bounced a bases-clearing, three-RBI double off of the "Blue Monster" in left field, moving the USD lead to 6-0.
- San Diego added on in the seventh with a quintet of runs to make it 11-0, doing so via a bases-loaded walk from Will Worthington, a bouncing two-RBI double down the left field line from Armas, a sacrifice fly from Justin DeCriscio, and an RBI fielder's choice from Gurevitch.
- LMU scored once in the eighth on an RBI single but got no closer, earning USD a commanding 11-1 victory at Page Stadium.
ON THE MOUND
- Ryan Kysar started Friday night's game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in three scoreless innings, scattering five hits alongside a walk and a strikeout.
- He was relieved by Conner Thurman, who struck out the side in the fourth enroute to two scoreless frames of his own that saw him total five strikeouts and earn his first win of 2023.
- James Sashin was next with two more scoreless innings, followed by Drake Frize, who allowed a run on two hits.
- Nick Suspenzi closed Friday night's game out with a scoreless ninth.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Armas paced the San Diego offense with a 2-for-4 performance that saw him score a run, double twice, and drive in a career-high five runs.
- Gurevitch was 1-for-6 but drove in three and scored once.
- DeCriscio (3-for-5), Peraza (3-for-5), Austin Smith (2-for-5) and Armas all had multiple hits on Friday.
- DeCriscio has now recorded multiple hits in each of his last five games.
- The nine earned runs San Diego scored on Loyola Marymount starter Diego Barerra on Friday night equaled the lefty's total runs allowed over his first seven starts in 2023.
