LOS ANGELES — An eighth-inning home run from
Will Worthington on Saturday night at Page Stadium lifted San Diego baseball (20-20-1,13-7 WCC) to a clutch 6-3 win over first-place Loyola Marymount (21-20, 14-6 WCC), marking the Toreros' sixth consecutive WCC victory as they took a conference series for the second week in a row.
WORTHINGTON PLAYS THE HERO AGAIN
- Both teams remained scoreless through Saturday's first three frames before Dustin Allen got USD on the board in the fourth, slapping an RBI grounder to first base that made it 1-0 in favor of San Diego.
- Worthington doubled that lead a batter later on an RBI groundout of his own, pushing the Torero advantage to 2-0.
- In the top of the fifth, Angelo Peraza added on with an RBI single back up the middle, putting USD up 3-0 over the Lions.
- Loyola Marymount rallied to tie the game at three across the fifth inning (RBI fielder's choice) and seventh inning (RBI single and RBI sacrifice fly), setting the stage for San Diego's clutch late-game surge.
- After Austin Smith lined out to begin the top of the eighth, James Arakawa bounced a single over the LMU third baseman's head.
- Dustin Allen struck out in the ensuing at-bat, bringing Worthington to the plate.
- The junior sent the first pitch he saw over Page Stadium's right-field wall for a go-ahead opposite-field home run, plating Arakawa to put USD back ahead by a 5-3 margin.
- Ian Blazier added on for one last insurance run in the top of the ninth with a sacrifice fly, giving San Diego a 6-3 lead it did not relinquish.
ANOTHER TEAM EFFORT ON THE MOUND
- Austin Smith started Saturday night's game on the mound and turned in four-plus strong frames.
- His final line: 4.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 3 BB, 1 K
- Ivran Romero was first out the bullpen in relief of Smith and set forth 1.2 scoreless and hitless innings.
- Ryan Robinson followed by allowing two runs on two hits across two innings, then Conner Thurman earned his first save of 2023 with a perfect ninth.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Jack Gurevitch, Smith, and Arakawa all had two hits on Saturday night.
- Worthington paced the USD offense with three RBIs and his fourth homer of 2023.
- Arakawa scored two runs.
- Gabe D'Arcy tripled in the top of the ninth to earn his first career college hit. He also scored two runs and drew a walk in what marked just his second game as a Torero.
- Robinson picked up his team-best sixth win of 2023 to move to 6-1.
