IRVINE, Calif. – Sophomore
Daniella Hubble made history in the mile, to lead the San Diego track & field program over Friday and Saturday at the Steve Scott Invitational on the campus of UC Irvine.
"The highlights of the night were records that were broken by Hubble and Coleman in the mile," said head coach
Will Guarino. "We are looking forward to closing the season next week."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hubble led off the action in the mile invitational alongside teammate Aryam Jaimes, as both runners surpassed the record that stood for 12 years, once owned by Nicole Riley.
- Hubble smashed the previous record with a time of 5:06.72, best the previous mark by over 12 seconds.
- Jaimes was not far behind with a time of 5:08.75 to also best Riley's old record.
- Gianna Sbarbaro kept the high marks going for the Toreros in the 5000m, recording the best time in the event by a Torero this season with a mark of 18:25.74.
- Sofia Green would lead off day two with a big personal best of 2:20.35 in the 800m to lead all Toreros in 31st.
- Freshman Stella Smith and junior Amanda Ghibaudo ended the day with top-10 finishes in the mile.
- In addition, Jake Coleman also broke an internal record in the mile set 12 years ago by Chris Flaherty, turning in a time of 4:15.18 to beat the record by over six seconds.
