MORAGA, Calif. — San Diego baseball (24-24-1, 17-10 WCC) on Sunday afternoon scored ten times to earn its fourth consecutive West Coast Conference series victory, taking two of three from Saint Mary's (21-24, 14-13 WCC) with a hard-fought 10-8 win at Louis Guisto Field in what marked its final regular-season game of 2023.
EARLY AND OFTEN
- Austin Smith got the scoring started in the top of the first with a two-RBI single up the middle, giving USD an early 2-0 lead after being shut out for the first time in WCC play on Saturday.
- Jack Gurevitch added on a batter later with an RBI double, moving the score to 3-0 in favor of the Toreros.
- Gurevitch came up big again in the top of the third, blasting an RBI triple into deep center field that extended the San Diego advantage to 4-0.
- An inning later, Dustin Allen gave USD its biggest lead of the game when he turned on an inside fastball for his third home run of 2023: a solo effort that made it a 5-0 game.
- Saint Mary's finally responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly and a three-run homer to pull within one at 5-4, but the Toreros had an immediate answer in the following frame.
- Ian Blazier hit back with an RBI groundout in the top of the sixth, then Allen shot a sharp line drive past the dive of the Gaels' centerfielder and raced around the bases for a thrilling two-run inside-the-park home run.
- A delayed steal from Angelo Peraza later in the inning allowed Justin DeCriscio to dash home from third, capping the four-run rally to push the Torero lead to 9-4.
- The Gaels plated another three in the bottom of the sixth on a home run before USD again responded with a run, this time when Will Worthington scored on an SMC error to make it 10-7, Toreros.
- Saint Mary's scored one more time in the bottom of the seventh on a solo homer but got no closer, earning San Diego a series-clinching 10-8 win over the Gaels at Louis Guisto Field.
KYSAR DOMINATES
- Ryan Kysar started Sunday afternoon's game on the mound for the Toreros and turned in four brilliant innings, holding Saint Mary's scoreless while surrendering three hits, walking only one, and striking out a game-high four to move to 2-0 in 2023.
- Ivran Romero and Jack Bunnell followed with an inning apiece, then Aídan Gonzalez bridged the gap to the ninth with two innings of his own.
- Conner Thurman closed the game out for USD with a scoreless ninth, picking up his third save of 2023 while striking out two and walking none.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Gurevitch paced the Torero offense on Sunday with a 3-for-5 performance that saw him rip two doubles and a triple, score once, and drive in a pair of runs.
- Allen hammered two home runs enroute to a team-high three RBIs.
- His inside-the-park homer in the sixth was the first inside-the-park home run by a Torero in 2023.
- Peraza was hitless on Sunday but drew two walks.
- USD has now won four consecutive WCC series and prevailed in 10 of its last 13 conference contests.
